This looks like it will be great fun. ;D
We need to discuss this at next troop meeting and make reservations.
It will also be great start to getting frostbite badge.
Please discuss with parents so we can get this underway.
Thanks, Steve
The Area 1 Klondike Derby registrations are now open. The Klondike will be held January 18]20, 2013; this yearfs theme is "The Mystery Trail". The common scouting skills used at Klondike will be ever present, but we intend to challenge the patrols in ways different from the past. There will be the standard rifle shooting session, with a host of other stations we are building. The mechanics are changing a little this year. We are giving each patrol a starting stipend of Klondike currency and a clue as to the location of their first station. Once they reach the location they will have 2 options, pay for the easy challenge or pay for the harder challenge. In nugget terms, a patrol would pay 10 nuggets to start the first challenge and could earn up to 20 nuggets back, but if they pay 20 nuggets for the harder challenge they could earn up to 50 nuggets. I am still working on the overall math, but that portrays the general concept that harder challenges have a higher earning potential. Upon completion, the patrol is given a clue as to their next location.
What happens if a patrol cannot figure out the clue? They can go to a clue station and pay for the next clue from the currency they have. Now, if the second clue is not helpful, they can wait 5 ]10 minutes and purchase another clue, until the last clue is given and the clue keeper gives them the actual location. There will be 3 to 5 clue sets developed to support this mechanic.
The 1st, 2nd and 3rd patrol across the finish line will receive a bonus on completing their trail. The winning patrol will have the most nuggets registered at the exit station. If for some reason, a patrol runs out of nuggets, a loan can be provided which will come off of their total at the end of the day. The cost will be a 10 minute penalty.
For closing festivities, there will be a brief auction of 2 to 3 major items. Following the auction, there will be a night time sled race which will award more nuggets to the winning patrol. After the sled race, the Klondike Trading Post will be open to offer bartering a host of goods in exchange for nuggets earned.
We are requesting volunteers from the Troops, at the minimum, one adult per Troop and we are asking for 1 older scout per Troop. The adult leaders will be part of the eventfs core staff (leadership training opportunity). The adults will help in facilitation of other activities that cannot be assigned to the Scouts.
Hopefully, this gives you an idea of the scope of the event. We look forward to seeing your Troop at
Rodney for the Klondike; it will be a time to remember!
